We don't recommend it. Carbon block filters have a defined adsorption capacity — once the carbon surface is saturated, contaminants pass through untreated. You won't necessarily notice a change in flow rate or taste, but the filtration performance drops off. At $24.95 per cartridge, the cost per gallon of treated water is under three cents. Running a saturated filter to save on replacements defeats the purpose of having a filtration system in the first place.
Yes. Run water through the new cartridge for two to three minutes before consuming. Activated carbon blocks produce fine carbon dust during manufacturing and shipping. Flushing clears that dust and prevents it from entering your drinking water. You will likely see slight discoloration in the first flush — that is normal and expected.
